Once you decide to become a certified nurse assistant, you may feel impatient to begin your career preparation. Working as a CNA requires that you complete an approved education program, including classroom and clinical learning, and pass a state licensing exam. Learn what’s required for admission to CNA classes so you can join the next group of students beginning their studies.
Meet Age, Education and Health Requirements
You must be at least 18 years old before you can study to become a CNA and have either your high school diploma or a GED. General good health is also a requirement, and your school will typically ask for your up-to-date annual physical and immunization records. Working in healthcare is often physically stressful, so you may have to answer questions about your ability to lift or move a minimum weight.
Undergo a Background Check
Because those in the nursing field play such a big role in providing direct care to adult and juvenile patients in home and home-like settings, the integrity of those who are hired as CNAs is of the utmost importance. You can expect to be asked for permission to carry out a background check.
Other Common Requirements
As each CNA training school is independent, you may find that some schools have additional requirements of applicants. These may include proving your reading, writing or math skills are sufficient for use in a medical setting and completion of a 2-step TB test with a negative result.
